Problems with your local power supply system? Low voltages? Power line disturbances? HF–insolation? What does a clean power supply affect? How do interferences get into the power supply and why can’t these interferences simply be filtered? We will try to answer these questions and explain how the cicable power supply can improve the situation …

Main distortions everywhere …

Without electricity every high–end system remains mute, but it often sounds bad with the normal supply. In any case it’s noticeable that the intensity and frequency of power supply interferences are increasing. So why not credit the power supply it’s rightful place of priority and create the conditions for high–quality play back with a clean power supply?

Too many cooks spoil the … current!

En route from the powerhouse to your local outlet, many consumers use the same power supply line, with partially devastating consequences for the quality of the power supply line. A survey can be found :: here. A formerly clean sinewave nearly becomes nearly a rectangle. The consequences are an infinite number of odd harmonics. And that’s just ONE problem. Every consumer [lawn–mower, microwave oven, drilling machine, hair blower, etc.] additionaly influences the quality of the current. You can see it [flicker], you can hear it. Above all in the evening, during peak demand. Just when you’d like to enjoy music your neighbours want to pursue their mains–operated hobbies.

Solutions …

Until now many manufacturers devised applications, which solved just one part of the problem – and even then they were usually only imperfect solutions. So the numerous filters, conditioners, transformers, etc. just solved ONE problem, mostly they were only responsible for one device. The expense would have to be doubled, trebled or quadrupled for the whole system.

What the PS2.4Q is NOT!

First of all: the cicable Power Source PS2.4Q is not a conditioner, not an isolating transformator, not a power line filter and doesn’t have any compensating or correctioning generator system, even though it handles all these functions along the way!

So what is the cicable Power Source?

The cicable PS2.4Q is a self–sufficient power amplifier generating a clean sine voltage. It is built as a linear power amplifier with a short–term power delivery of three times its rated continuous power.

Thereby the power source is completely secure against overload and has extremely minimal distortions and phase shifts between the trigger and output signal.

The damping of undesired perturbations is more than 110dB, which makes subsequent power filters obsolete. On the contrary these types of filters normally make the sound of connected devices worse.

Apart from »classical« phenomena [voltage fluctuations, harmonic distortions] the design ensures that critical high frequency bursts and spikes are also excluded. Conceptually the cicable Power Source fulfils the following functions:

 

Constant voltage
The voltage should be independent from load current and should always deliver the same voltage without a regulation delay.

Constant frequency
The power frequency should be exactly as specified without a regulation delay.

Power–Conditioning
Power conditioning meaning the voltage is free from DC offset: the sine voltage doesn’t have an offset in comparison to the zero crossing.

Power DropOuts
Uninterruptible power supply up to 100ms at 100% interruption; up to one period with shorter interruptions.

Overvoltage protector
As a result of its construction, overvoltages on the power supply input are completely eliminated. One advantage is that high grade audio components are protected from expensive surge damage.

High frequency supression
High frequent interferences, external, internal, caused directly or indirectly, can be eliminated. Further filters with all their disadvantages are not necessary.

Low distortion
Even order distortion [a multiple of the line voltage frequency] and – odd – distortions [result of a non sine voltage] are at least 80dB below the fundamental at all operating conditions – this equates to 0.01% distortion.

Independence from other consumers / loads
The power supply is completely decoupled from other consumer load. [Load regulation is due to the low output impedance better than 0.1%].

Compensation of apparent output rate
The inductive and capacitive power rates are fully compensated by the functionality of the cicable Power Source, keeping the sine voltage clean. The claimed low distortion can be achieved only this way. [Functioning by the »four–quadrant–principle«]

   

One for all, all for one …

The cicable PS2.4Q serves your whole hifi system and doesn’t just improve single devices. So the buying of several power sources of different power ratings is not necessary. It is constructed to create sufficient power for 95% of all system configurations. And if it’s still not enough, well… there are much bigger models.

One–way street

Power line interferences affect every consumer load and don’t use ‘one–way streets’ to spread. They’re looking for access by any path, mostly where less resistance is to be found; interferences criss–cross the power lines. So optimising one single component of your system is of no use, because the other components lead their interferences back to the »clean components«. Assistance comes from the mean 0,1% load regulation of the cicable Power Source, acting like a stop sign: »no admittance« !

What does the PS2.4Q deliver?

As Rolls–Royce would say: enough! – But seriously, the cicable Power Source supplies 2000 VA at normal operation, in intermittent operation even 6000 VA. This should be enough for bigger hifi–systems with high–performance power amplifiers. We experienced that even big mono power amplifiers don’t utilize more than 1000 VA, and here we’re talking about 500W power rating your speakers have to transform into sound.

Technical consequences ...

The consequences for the performance of your hifi components is huge. The constant supply voltage means an increase of about 10% or more of the amplifier’s output capability. The reduced distortion factor additionally improves the sound quality. With some mono power amplifiers we measured 20dB less distortion. These design parameters can only suggest the improvement of all high end components.
